Three rules turn the chart into a size
1 · Rows are ceilings
Each number is the largest body measurement that size fits — not a range, not an average. A 38″ bust fits the US 10 row because the row's ceiling is 38″.
2 · Between sizes, round up
A 38.5″ bust has passed the US 10 ceiling, so it belongs to US 12. Rounding down asks a dress to close over more body than it was cut for.
3 · The largest governs
Your three measurements rarely sit in one row. The row your largest measurement needs is your size for anything fitted; the calculator does this matching for you and shows its working.
A consensus chart, honestly labelled
There is no law — anywhere — that defines a dress size. Standards bodies publish reference body measurements (ASTM D5585 in the US, the ISO 8559 series internationally), but no brand is obliged to cut to them, and most publish charts that drift from the standards and from each other.
So this chart was built the only defensible way: published size charts from major retailers and standards references were cross-checked line by line, and where they disagreed, the consensus value was taken. The disagreement is real and worth knowing about: across published charts, a US 10 bust appears anywhere from 36.5″ to 39.5″. This chart prints 38″ — the top of the most common published range — because a chart used for ordering decisions should err toward the garment closing.
The grading pattern that emerges is consistent: sizes step about 1–1.5″ apart through the middle of the chart and 2″ apart at the ends; UK labels run exactly 4 above US labels, EU labels 32 above, and Australian labels share the UK numbers. Those three conversion rules hold across every row — which is why the converter can be simple arithmetic while the measurements behind it cannot.
The practical consequence, printed here rather than buried: use this chart to find your size, then compare your measurements with the specific brand's chart before ordering. Where the two disagree by more than an inch, believe the brand about its own clothes — and believe this chart about your body.

Petite numbers mirror misses numbers but the garments are proportioned for frames under about 5′4″ — shorter bodice, waist and skirt. The measurements run slightly smaller at the same number because the whole pattern scales down.

Built by a person, checked against sources
Ian Welkins
I build small, single-purpose calculators and check every number they print. This one exists because dress sizing is a mess of unregulated charts — the least I could do was gather the published ones in one place and show the working.
