A child's size, by height first
Kids' dress labels are named after ages, but they're built on height. Enter her height (and weight if you have it) and get the size that will actually fit.

Height governs
A dress hangs from the shoulders; its length and bodice are set by the child's height. Every kids chart is built height-first, and two children of the same age routinely stand four inches apart.
Weight arbitrates
When height lands between two sizes, weight breaks the tie: a child in the upper weight range for her height takes the bigger size; a slight child takes the smaller. This calculator does exactly that.
T means toddler
2T–4T are cut for a toddler's body — rounder tummy, room in the seat. Plain sizes from 4 up are cut for a child. The overlap ages are where parents get caught; measure, don't guess.

Three children, sized
52″ tall, age 8
52″ sits inside the size 8 band (up to 53″). Her age label and her height agree — the easy case.
45″ tall, age 6
Her age says 6, but 45″ is past the size 5 ceiling (44.5″). Height wins: size 6, even though she won't turn "size 7" for a while yet.
37″ tall, age 3
Between 2T (36″) and 3T (38.5″): the first size that contains her height is 3T. In a toddler, growing room is honest — she'll be in it all season.
Three rules that save returns
Measure on the day
Children grow in spurts; a measurement from last season is archaeology. Height against a doorframe takes ten seconds.
One size of growing room, max
A-line and empire styles hide a size of growth gracefully. Two sizes up fits nobody, now or later — proportions change, not just lengths.
Event dresses: fit now
For a wedding or photos, buy for the child she is this month. Growing room is for everyday clothes, not for the dress in the pictures.

Built by a person, checked against sources
Ian Welkins
I build small, single-purpose calculators and check every number they print. This one exists because dress sizing is a mess of unregulated charts — the least I could do was gather the published ones in one place and show the working.
